Red Hook Jazz Returns

The Red Hook Jazz Festival is a great event, which they’ve been doing a few years now (I think).  It’s coming back, and Katia Kelly at Pardon me for Asking has put the info better together than I could:  go check out the details there, you lovers of end-of-summer jazz.  We won’t even point out that it’s not technically Red Hook…woops.

The Lineup for this Year’s Red Hook Fest

We’re closing in on two weeks till the Red Hook Fest.  Check out the mainstage lineup:

South Brooklyn Does Soho

Check out students from Justin Wedes’s Digital Expressions music class, along with their collaborators from PS 15 in Red Hook, next Wednesday at the Apple Store in Soho. Students will be sharing their original beats and talking about the process of creating them.  Special Guest- Percussionist, DTE Teaching Artist (and recent recipient of the nickname “The Godfather”) Angel Rodriguez.

Dance Theatre Etcetera Benefit Tuesday Night

Come on out to support community-based arts in Red Hook, Brooklyn and see an incredible concert from “the most sought after group in New York,” La Excelencia.  What are community-based arts?

  • Innovative arts education with local teens, keeping young people safe, off the streets, and engaged in productive collaboration with their peers to make Brooklyn a better place to be
  • Large-scale performance projects and the annual Red Hook Fest, animating Brooklyn’s public spaces as exciting sites for art-making, civic dialogue, & professional artistic excellence in neighborhoods that might not otherwise get access.
  • Collaborations with over twenty community non-profit organizations, a network of partners serving Brooklyn’s youth and sharing goals on economic and community development.  Using the arts to advance the interests of our community.

Brooklyn Folk Fest Preview/Benefit

In May, Jalopy will host the 2nd Annual Brooklyn Folk Festival.  Help make that event happen and bring some of New York’s best folk acts under one roof, by attending a Festival preview/fundraiser on March 13th.

Lineup for The Brooklyn Folk Fest Preview/Benefit Concert, March 13th:

9pm: Mamie Minch
10pm: Alex Battles and Banjorama
11pm: The Dust Busters
12am: Blind Boy Paxton

And for just a reasonable $10 cover charge.  Check out the writeup on the Music Industry News Network for more info.

Navegante @ Southpaw

Friends of DTE from Red Hook Festivals-gone-by (not to mention an awesome in-school performance at South Brooklyn), Navegante, has a big show coming up on Thursday at Southpaw (9PM), headlining for the BAM SOUNDS LIKE BROOKLYN FESTIVAL.

They’re an awesome band- check out their website for vids/music, and really seem to be taking off lately.  Buy tickets here or, for those of you on the dreaded f’book, check out the event page.

DJs at the Park Tonight

Got the headsup from the “Digital Soul Experience” blog.

Just three hours from now (it’s about 4pm now- show starts at 7) you can head over to Red Hook Park (that’s the one on Bay, b/w Clinton & Henry- think ballfields) to catch a DJ battle under the not-too-bad sun, lasting till about 8:30.

It’s DJ Premier vs. DJ Scratch…or Pete Rock.  There appears to be some disagreement on the park website, so if nothing else  just show up to see who’s performing.  In either case it’s sure to be good- these DJs have some serious experience under their belts/turntables, having performed with some of the biggest names in hip hop over the last couple of decades.  Come out and enjoy- EAST COAST.
