Director of Programs
The Red Hook Initiative (RHI) is a community-based non-profit organization that works to confront and affect the consequences of intergenerational poverty through an approach that provides support in the areas of education, health, employment and community development. As the organization continues to grow, the Red Hook Initiative seeks a Director of Programs to manage the effective delivery of RHI’s 25+ programs and services.RHI’s primary work is with young people between the ages of 9 and 22 years old. At the core of RHI’s guiding principles is the belief that community members can transform their own social conditions and realities. As a practice, 95% of RHI’s employees live in the Red Hook Houses. Eventually, the goal is to employ 100% of its staff from the Red Hook community. In 2008 & 2009 RHI paid over $450,000 back into the neighborhood—demonstrating its economic and social value to the neighborhood. Core program areas support young people through offerings in education, employment, physical health and social health.The Director of Programs will work closely with the Executive Director to provide day-to-day program and staff management and to maintain the strategic vision and quality programming that exemplifies RHI. The Director of Programs will oversee approximately 20 full and part time staff. The ideal candidate will have an unwavering commitment to the mission of RHI as well as the proven ability to work effectively with people of all ages. Top candidates will have a strong track record of designing programming for youth and a demonstrated commitment to the populations RHI supports. This is a full-time, exempt position located in Brooklyn, NY and reports directly to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities: Management and Administration • Develop, implement and manage effective internal operational systems for programs • Effectively align program and staff support and operations with long-term agency goals and expectations • Foster a team-oriented, supportive, accountable work environment at RHI • Represent RHI at local events, community gatherings, or workshops and trainings • Work with the Executive Director to develop and evaluate organization strategy • Contribute to grant writing and reporting process • Present programmatic elements of RHI in a compelling manner to prospective funders and other supporters Program Management and Evaluation • Oversee program operations and lead staff in monthly and long-term program planning • Assist in developing strategies to engage young people and organizations from Red Hook in the programs and services offered by RHI • Provide hands-on supervision, coaching, and professional development workshops for staff • Recruit and hire new staff members in keeping with the RHI model • Evaluate program effectiveness using an outcomes-based approach and ensure the agency’s ability to anticipate and effectively respond to changing client needs • Lead efforts to establish and maintain sound working relationships with agency partners Core Competencies • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of constituents including teens, parents, health and human service professionals, teachers, and school leaders. • Ability to handle a variety of projects and assignments at once, managing time well, and asking for support when needed. • Ability to work independently and as a team member. • Resident of or familiarity with the Red Hook community preferred
Qualifications: • B.A./B.S with 2-3 years of management and program development experience • 3-4 years of experience working directly with youth and/or community development or grassroots organizations • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Experience with evaluation or participatory action research • Ability to multi task while maintaining a tremendous attention to detail • Ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team • English/Spanish Bilingual preferred Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
About The Red Hook Initiative: The Red Hook Health Initiative began in 2002 as a project of a local hospital in an effort to reduce the growing health disparities that exist in Red Hook, Brooklyn. In 2006 the Red Hook Initiative formed as a community-based non-profit in order to address this wide-range of community needs. The organization works to confront and affect the consequences of intergenerational poverty through an approach that offers support in education, employment, health and community development. Participants of RHI believe that the momentum to improve the quality of life for Red Hook’s residents – as well as the community at large – must come from the people living in the community.
