Ever wonder what the workspaces of local sculptors, painters, carvers and photographers look like? This weekend, artists of Red Hook and Carroll Gardens are opening up their doors to showcase their crafts.

Red Hook Homes Opens Doors

The Red Hook Homes (formerly Red Hook Co-ops?) has opened its doors to 35 families, with an innovative model of affordable housing that will allow for 20 market rate units to be sold in the coming months.

A project of the Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), it is the largest affordable homeownership opportunity in the history of Red Hook, according to Michelle de la Uz, the FAC’s executive director, who noted that it is also the single largest housing development project that the FAC has completed in its 32-year history.

Tomorrow: Andrew Butler @ ANT Fest

Andrew Butler is a mulit-talented, wonderful artist who has taught in DTE’s in-school programs, is currently (2nd session today!) doing the In Transition Theater Workshop with local young people, and performed for some friends of DTE back in August at the Clover Club.

Tomorrow night, check out his one-man show (excerpts of which were performed at the Clover Club), Rags Parkland, at Ars Nova’s Ant Fest 2010.

On Arts Education

A good post from Richard Kessler of the Huffington Post about arts, education, and the reality that there is no quick-fix for the problems in our educational system.

But, in many schools, particularly in big city schools that are low performing, subjects that make for an expanded curriculum rather than narrowed, like the arts and physical education, have been squeezed from the school day. The arts are starved for resources and diminished through policies that define an education as reading and math.

Harvest Fest This Saturday

If you’re a young person, age 15-21, we hope you’ll be at the first session of the In Transition Workshop this Saturday (info/applications available here).

Everyone else, though, check out the Harvest Fest down on the Added Value farm!  10am – 5pm, rain or shine.  The day will include:

• [their] “pick your own” pumpkin patch — carve them right here or bring them home.

• Kids activities including live animals to pet, face painting, balloon hats, and a scavenger hunt.

• Live music and performances by Bomba Yo! The City Billies, Professor Louis, The Broken Arrowz, Rebel Diaz and more.

• Great Food provided by The Good Fork, iCi, Rice, Kevin’s and the Lobster Pound.

• A Farmers Market featuring locally grown produce and hand made products.

• Cooking demonstrations with local seasonal food.

Well, for one thing it’s going to be a beautiful day & maybe the last time all year you can see the breathtaking grounds of the Cemetery with such nice weather.

More than that, though- tomorrow is your last chance EVER to see this one-of-a-kind site-specific performance.

For the last seven years, DTE Executive Director Martha Bowers has directed the piece and produced it in collaboration with the Green-Wood Historic Fund.   Part walking tour, part performance, part guided meditation through the beautiful and richly historical Green-Wood Cemetery, Angels and Accordions brings to life a Brooklyn treasure through dance, live music, and design.

Tickets are offered at a discount if purchased in advance, so head over to the DTE site and choose the performance time (12:30pm or 4pm) you’d like to attend.

• The 4th Annual Red Hook Film Festival lineup was announced.
